Dermaplaning

A quick, blade-based exfoliation that clears away dead skin and peach fuzz, leaving skin instantly smoother, brighter, and better able to soak up your skincare.

Auckland CBD · $119 / 30 mins (Standalone) · $99 / 20 mins (Add-On)

Dermaplaning gently removes surface dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) using a sterile blade. It's a purely physical, no-product exfoliation, so what you feel and see is straightforward: smoother, brighter, more even-looking skin, right away.

It's mainly a surface exfoliation treatment, so it's best suited to smoothness, dullness and peach fuzz rather than deeper concerns like acne scarring or enlarged pores, those respond better to treatments like microneedling or a peel. Dermaplaning at Urban Beauty, Auckland CBD is available standalone or as an add-on to another skin treatment.

Is Dermaplaning Right for My Skin?

Dermaplaning tends to be a great fit if:

  • Your skin feels rough, dull or textured rather than deeply scarred or pitted
  • You have visible peach fuzz affecting your skin's smoothness or makeup application
  • You want an instant, no-downtime glow before an event
  • Your skin isn't currently dealing with active or inflamed breakouts
  • You want your skincare and makeup to sit and absorb better

Dermaplaning may not be suitable if:

You have active, inflamed or broken-out acne in the treatment area, open wounds or cuts, an active cold sore, sunburned or otherwise compromised skin, a tendency toward keloid scarring, or have recently used isotretinoin. Let us know at consultation and we'll assess whether it's the right fit or suggest an alternative.

What Happens During Treatment?
  1. Consultation. We check your skin's condition and confirm dermaplaning is the right fit, or suggest an alternative if it isn't.
  2. Cleansing. Skin is thoroughly cleansed and dried to prepare the surface.
  3. Dermaplaning. A sterile blade is passed across the skin at a shallow angle in short, controlled strokes, removing dead skin cells and peach fuzz as it goes.
  4. Finishing care. A calming product and SPF complete the treatment, or your chosen add-on if you've booked one.

Most clients find it comfortable rather than uncomfortable, just a light scraping sensation as the blade moves across the skin. Numbing isn't usually needed.

Will My Facial Hair Grow Back Thicker After Dermaplaning?

No. Dermaplaning doesn't touch the hair follicle, so removing peach fuzz at the surface doesn't make it grow back thicker, darker or faster. It may feel slightly different at first as the hair grows back, since it's been cut straight across rather than tapered, but its natural thickness and colour don't change.

Is Dermaplaning the Same as Shaving Your Face?

Not quite, though they share one thing in common: both remove hair from the surface of the skin.

Professional dermaplaning goes further. It's performed with a sterile surgical blade and a controlled technique specifically aimed at exfoliation, lifting away dead skin cells along with the peach fuzz, not just the hair. Home shaving is generally aimed at hair removal alone, without that same exfoliating goal or the same level of control over depth and technique. Different tools, different intent, different result.

Not the Right Fit?

Looking for something deeper than surface exfoliation? For acne scarring, texture or firmness, explore Microneedling, or for pigmentation and deeper cell turnover, explore BioRePeel. Not sure which fits your skin? Book a consultation and we'll help you choose.

Dermaplaning Aftercare

Little to no downtime for most clients, and you can generally return to normal activities straight after. That said, skin can feel temporarily sensitive, look slightly pink, or develop small bumps in some people, since the surface has just been freshly exfoliated.

  • Wear SPF daily, freshly exfoliated skin is more sun-sensitive
  • Keep skincare gentle for a day or two, hold off on strong actives if you use them
  • If skin feels pink or sensitive, wait until the next day before applying makeup
  • When you do wear makeup, use clean brushes and avoid heavily fragranced products
  • Let us know if you notice ongoing irritation so we can advise on next steps
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does dermaplaning do to your skin?
Dermaplaning gently removes surface dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) using a sterile blade, leaving skin smoother and brighter. It's mainly a surface exfoliation treatment, best for smoothness, dullness and peach fuzz rather than deeper concerns like acne scarring.
Does dermaplaning hurt?
No, it's generally comfortable and shouldn't be painful. Most clients just feel a light scraping sensation as the blade moves across the skin, and numbing isn't usually needed.
Will my facial hair grow back thicker or darker?
No. Dermaplaning doesn't touch the hair follicle, so removing peach fuzz at the surface doesn't make it grow back thicker, darker or faster. It may feel slightly different at first since the hair has been cut across, but its natural thickness and colour stay the same.
How long do dermaplaning results last?
The smooth, freshly exfoliated feeling is temporary, skin naturally continues to shed cells and hair grows back over time. Visible smoothness usually lasts a few weeks, varying by skin and hair growth cycle, and dermaplaning can be repeated as part of a regular skin maintenance routine.
How often should I have dermaplaning?
Usually spaced around 3 to 4 weeks apart, giving skin time to complete its normal renewal cycle. It's not something you need continuously though, some clients book it regularly, others just before an event or when skin feels rough or dull.
Is there any downtime after dermaplaning?
Little to no downtime for most clients, you can generally return to normal activities straight after. Skin may feel slightly sensitive or look pink for a short while, and because the surface has just been exfoliated, gentle skincare and daily SPF matter afterwards.
Can I have dermaplaning if I have acne?
It depends on the type and severity. Dermaplaning should generally be avoided over active, inflamed or broken-out areas, as passing a blade over irritated skin can cause further irritation. If you have mild congestion or occasional breakouts, we'll assess your skin first to see if it's suitable.
Can dermaplaning cause breakouts?
Most people don't break out simply from having dermaplaning, but temporary bumps or irritation can happen for some. Skin is more sensitive right after treatment, so using heavy or irritating products too soon can contribute to congestion, let us know if you're acne-prone so we can check it's right for your skin.
Can I wear makeup after dermaplaning?
We recommend letting your skin settle rather than applying makeup right away, ideally waiting until the next day if it feels pink or sensitive. When you do, use clean brushes and avoid heavily fragranced or irritating products.
Is dermaplaning worth it?
Genuinely worthwhile if your goals are smoother skin, peach fuzz removal and gentle surface exfoliation, and results are immediate, which is why it's popular before events. It's not the right fit for every concern though, for acne scarring, pigmentation, enlarged pores or deeper texture, microneedling or a peel may suit you better.
